Listening and drawing to find your own voice.
For me, creating a painting or a documentary is essentially the same. I realise that I don’t distinguish one from the other. Both start with an excitement, an idea, but they transform as they progress. The difference, from my point of view, lies in the timing and the people involved. While a documentary often starts as a kind of notebook where it’s just the subject, the camera, and me, it often ends up involving many people in the process, which complicates everything. With painting, you can more or less do everything yourself. And this particularly satisfies me—not depending on anyone.
However, both processes feed off each other. This is how the idea for this series naturally arose. On my journey, research blends with life. I meet many people, and some become friends, accomplices in this intimate journey.
Many of these portraits were made during my travels, while others were created in my studio in Barcelona. In the solitude of the traveller, I sometimes look for common elements in the people I meet, mirrors. The mirror is not just seeing yourself in the other, but also seeing those you once crossed paths with and recognise. Faces repeat, casually linked to past experiences, evoking the idea of eternal repetition.
I understand that posing for a portrait can be overwhelming. For this reason, I choose a quick and fluid technique, using graphite and Indian ink. Each portrait session lasts between 10 and 30 minutes, which allows me to capture the essence of the subject without losing the freshness and spontaneity of the moment.
The conversations during the portrait allow me to discover and share ideas and topics that interest me, helping me to reflect not only the outer image but also the inner essence of each person. However, there are times when the portrait can be a silent process; there are barely any words, and yet the connection remains profound. Both experiences, conversation and silence, are equally valid and valuable. What truly fascinates me is the connection that arises in those moments, whether through the exchange of words or shared silence.
Through Retrato Doble (Double Portrait), I want to invite you to this gala of the incomparable, to discover the beauty hidden in the simplicity of each encounter.

Escuchar y dibujar para encontrar tu propia voz.
Para mí, realizar una pintura o un documental es esencialmente lo mismo. Me doy cuenta que no distingo uno del otro. Ambos empiezan por una ilusión, por una idea, pero se van transformando a medida que avanzan. La diferencia radica, desde mi punto de vista, en los tiempos y en las personas involucradas. Si bien un documental empieza muchas veces como una especie de cuaderno de apuntes donde estamos el sujeto, la cámara y yo, luego implica muchas veces incluir a muchas personas en el proceso y eso lo complica todo. Con la pintura más o menos puedes hacerlo todo tú. Y esto particularmente me satisface. No depender de nadie.
Sin embargo, ambos procesos se retroalimentan. Así de forma natural surgió la idea de realizar esta serie. En mi viaje, la investigación se mezcla con la vida. Conozco a muchas personas y algunas se convierten en amigos, en cómplices de este viaje íntimo.
Muchos de estos retratos fueron realizados durante mis viajes, mientras que otros han sido creados en mi estudio en Barcelona. En la soledad del viajero, a veces busco en las personas que encuentro elementos en común, espejos. El espejo no es simplemente verte a ti mismo en el otro, sino también ver a aquellos que en algún momento te cruzaste y reconoces. Las caras se repiten, casualmente ligadas a experiencias ya vividas, evocando la idea de la eterna repetición.
Entiendo que posar para un retrato puede ser abrumador. Por esta razón, opto por una técnica rápida y fluida, utilizando grafito y tinta china. Cada sesión de retrato dura entre 10 y 30 minutos, lo que permite capturar la esencia del retratado sin perder la frescura y espontaneidad del momento.
Las conversaciones durante el retrato me permiten descubrir y compartir ideas y temas que me interesan, ayudándome a reflejar no solo la imagen exterior, sino también la esencia interior de cada persona. Sin embargo, hay veces en las que el retrato puede ser un proceso silencioso; apenas hay palabras, y aun así, la conexión sigue siendo profunda. Ambas experiencias, la conversación y el silencio, son igualmente válidas y valiosas. Lo que realmente me apasiona es la conexión que surge en esos momentos, ya sea a través del intercambio de palabras o en el silencio compartido.
A través de Retrato Doble, quiero invitarte a esta gala de los incomparables, a descubrir la belleza que se esconde en la simplicidad de cada encuentro.
